Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome / M.E. / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Who Does It Affect?
Please note: Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome, Myalgic Encephalomyelitis,
and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are believed to fall under the umbrella
term 'ME/CFS'. To make it easier for you to read through this page,
Sleepydust will use the term 'ME/CFS' to
refer to them collectively. But it's worth bearing in mind
that each of these separate terms have similar but different definitions.
Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome, M.E., and Chronic
Fatigue Syndrome affects people of all ages, creeds and colours,
both male and female. Although it is said that ME/CFS affects mostly
caucasion women, this condition can actually affect anyone, at any
age.
When it comes to Myalgic
Encephalomyelitis:
"One American study carried out by the Centers for Disease
Control in 1998 concluded that the incidence of ME is
now higher than that for lung cancer, breast cancer or
HIV infection in women."
-- Kenney KK, 'Wichita Study Reveals Much About Who Has CFIDS',
The CFIDS Chronicle, Nov-Dec 1998, p25 [as cited in 'Shattered'
by Dr Lynne Michell, p8] --
Stress can play a major role in ME/CFS. So, not surprisingly, ME/CFS
is prominent in industrialised countries and affects
many people who work long hours or are in fast-paced jobs.
And in 1997, a survey indicated that ME/CFS was the most common
cause of long-term sickness absence from school in the United Kingdom.
